However, as well as knowing which plastics are recyclable, you also need to consider how they can be recycled — not all materials can go in your kerbside recycling bin.
LDPE 4 is a good example. While it is recyclable, it’s generally more difficult to process than HDPE plastic. It has to be separated from harder plastics and sometimes runs the risk of getting caught up in recycling plant machinery. For this reason, not all local authorities will accept soft plastics like carrier bags or cling film in general recycling — you may need to take these to dedicated LDPE 4 recycling points in your local supermarket. It’s always best to check whether there are any restrictions in your area.
Why should you recycle LDPE plastic instead of sending it to landfill? With LDPE 4 products being less convenient to recycle, many residents and businesses place packaging, plastic wrap, and carrier bags in with their general waste. The problem with doing so is that soft plastics can take hundreds, if not thousands, of years to break down. What’s more, because they are so light, they can easily drift away from landfill sites.
By recycling LDPE in an appropriate and effective way, new plastic packaging can be created in a far less energy-intensive way than manufacturing them from scratch. For businesses, there’s another incentive, too. The more you recycle, the less landfill tax you will need to pay.
